How many
of you are brave enough to admit you've chosen the wrong career? And how many would dare change it?
Some women view their
chosen careers as bonded labour. More so if they have been in that field of work for a few years now. Their insecurities and their
need for money make them hold onto it. What they don't realise is - that choosing a wrong career - is a mistake that is often made -
and it can be rectified.
It's never too late to follow your dreams - provided you know what you want - and you lay your plans
carefully.
While it may not be too late to change your career path - it may be more difficult for some women. As much as we'd
like to believe otherwise - age does play a part in it. That's why - it's all-important to start planning a new career soon after
you've realised you're in the wrong career. The more you choose to hem and haw and defer the decision - the more difficult it is
going to be eventually.
So take a good look at your interests. What kinds of professions interest you? Unless you're very
clear about which direction you want to move in - it would not be too prudent to think of switching careers. So, take a long, hard
look at what's within you. What you would really like to do in life. You must find your calling before you make a life altering
decision. Do your homework right.
How can you use your present skills in another profession? Whether it is your ability with
the computer, or your marketing competence, communication skills or managerial capability - how well can they be put to use in a new
field of work?
It's best to hold onto your current job - till you test the various possibilities. Some women use their
weekends to get a taste of their new professions. They often start off as volunteers or trainees. Once they know they've chosen
right - and the prospects are appealing - they feel more comfortable to give up their old jobs. After all, if they are disillusioned
about the new job - they still do have the old ones to go back to.
Naturally, some women feel apprehensive about venturing
into new territories. So, it's important that they learn new skills which will help stay on par in their new jobs. For example, if
you want to become a graphic designer - you have to take classes and learn all you can. Then you work at getting to be good at what
you want to be. This will probably tell on your free time for a while. But the question to be asked is - how badly do you want to
become a graphic designer? Enough to work hard for it for a year or two?
Women who are more cautious - not only train
themselves well - but hold on to their regular jobs - while they moonlight on their new project. This way - they build up a fair
portfolio - with which they can confidentially approach a potential employee.
A woman can change the direction of her career
if she's determined to do so. But determination has to be blended with skill, caution and astuteness.
