What you need to do is to make the most of your time and personalise it to fit your tastes and activities. Let's face it, you need a career, and you need to have an interesting personal life too. You shouldn't be trading one for the other.

Once you develop and hone your time management technique, life becomes easier. You find yourself more relaxed and able to do a lot more too.

  • You need a clear idea of how to use your time. Keep track of how you spend your time for a week. This will help you identify your fast working skills as well as your time wasters.

  • Make a list on the number of activities you have. Try to make a fairly accurate estimate of the amount of time spent on each activity. Where is it that you're losing time regularly?

  • Now, how can you cut down on the time spent on each activity? The answer is simple. Work smarter. Stop wasting time with trivial issues. Concentrate on what matters most and get that done before you let yourself get distracted. You'll discover that quality work cuts down on the quantity of time spent.

  • Make the most of your biological prime time. Some people are very productive in the early morning hours. Others take till mid-day to get into a good work mode. Some are late-night birds. Which category do you fit into? Figure that out and use that time to work efficiently.

  • Are you avoiding a difficult but important task? Don't. Get it done as soon as possible. Cut up the big task into smaller manageable ones. Work your way through them. Don't give yourself a choice to procrastinate any more.

  • Don't take on more than you can manage. Learn to recognise your limits and say no to extras. This applies to your social life too. Don't agree to obligatory visits you don't really enjoy.

  • Is there still too much on your list? Try to prioritise them. Get the most important ones done today. Make a fresh list tomorrow. Delegate what you know you cannot possibly do.

Life is meant to be enjoyed. Always put aside some time for what appeals to you most. There's no point in becoming a martyr.
