To Deal With A Layoff In The Family
Today's volatile job market has left many a family with the breadwinner bereft of a job. Layoffs have become an inevitable occurrence in today's work scenario. So what happens when you suddenly find yourself confronted with such a situation? Buckling down will not help. As the strength behind your family, as the key person responsible for your family's happiness, it is up to you to take action and overcome the setbacks.
- When the rumours of the impending layoff start, you got to get working. Think and plan ahead.
- Begin networking. Spread the word around that you/your husband is on the lookout for a job
- Budget your expenses and keep a watch on things but always with a positive outlook. Cut out all fringes from your monthly expenses. Cut corners wherever possible and stick to your budget Remember, you can always start spending again when things get better.
- Finding a new job might become a difficult proposition. You have to plan for a period of no-income.
- Stop using credit cards. The high rate of interest will not suit your situation. Resort to using one only in an emergency.
- Work on your resume. Update it before you send it out to companies. Do not wait too long before you begin this exercise, or you may be left out by the competition.
- In an emergency situation, even a part time job is better than none. Accept one if it comes your way while continuing to look for a permanent job. You never know what it might lead to!
- If you feel you are over-qualified for the job you've landed, it will still pay you to take it up and prove your worth to the employer. Maybe he will see your potential and give you a promotion.
- Never get depressed or get cowed down by the situation. Especially if all your leads fail to take you anywhere. Keep your chin up and continue the job hunt. Finally, it might be your positive outlook that will make a difference.
Being aware of all these points can truly minimise the jolt you get from the layoff, and help you survive until you find another job.
