Sometimes our careers tend to slide downwards. We seem to have little choice but to let that happen before we get down to doing something about it. Like all other facets of life, careers too go though their ups and downs. While people rarely need help in coping with the 'ups', they need all the help they can get to help counter the downs.

Keep some of these simple tips in mind. They'll help you to get going again.

  • The world does seem a hostile place at times like this. So it's important that you're not your own worst enemy. Learn to focus on your strengths and not your limitations.

  • View the setback as a temporary phase. Do your homework well. See what you need to do to get back on keel once again. Don't hesitate to learn new skills - every skill you learn is actually a step towards success.

  • Are you doing something that goes against your natural ability? Should you be changing your line to something you have a flair for, something you would enjoy more? Even if it doesn't seem as lucrative as you might want it to be? Maybe you should consider those options seriously.

  • Don't let a couple of mistakes depress you. Everybody makes them. But it is important that you learn from them and ensure you do better the next time. Failure is just a stepping-stone to success.

  • Success is never guaranteed, not even if you've graduated with honours from a top university. There is a lot more to your career that your marks sheet. You need to know how to transfer your knowledge to working conditions - this could take time and effort.

  • Keep your attitude positive and seize every opportunity that comes your way. And keep your fingers crossed.
