Telling a procrastinator to complete a task is like telling an anxious person to calm down. Most people think procrastinators are people who simply don't complete given tasks until the last minute.

But the problem can be more dangerous than that. Procrastinators actually postpone acts that would lead to success or positive change.

Strangely enough, some procrastinators continue to engage in behaviour that negatively impacts their lives. Twenty percent or more of the population consider themselves procrastinators.

In a November 1997 report in Psychological Science, researchers found that procrastinators tended to turn in papers later than other students and received lower grades. In the same study, procrastinators showed more physical symptoms of stress caused by missing deadlines as a result of their procrastination.

Procrastination is deeply rooted in an individual's personality, but most procrastinators can change their behaviour. While many researchers would disagree, time management and organisation is the key.

If procrastinators can learn to set aside time to complete projects and keep their tasks straight, they should be able to avoid any damage resulting from their behaviour.
