There has been a marked change in the attitude towards women in the new millennium. Women are now finding a place in boardrooms, in governing bodies, in Parliament and even as astronauts in space! In general, women have a greater visibility as compared to their position in the previous millennium. To cap it all, we now have the legislation to make salaries for women on par with their male counterparts. It seems as if the cup of freedom and equality is now filled to the brim. In India, the Bill on Domestic Violence protects all strata of women from the atrocities committed against them. The Bill to make daughters legal heirs to the parents' property along with their brothers has already been enacted. All this has played a part in giving women equal rights even in our country, where traditionally, women have taken a back seat where such issues are concerned.

The official IWD colours are purple, green and white

- purple for justice, dignity, self-reverence and self-respect (and representing the women's vote)
- white for purity in public as well as private life
- green for hope and new life.

These colours have become synonymous with women's movements. But of late, the white colour has been rejected as views on 'purity' differ greatly and the colour gold has been introduced to represent a 'new dawn' in women's movements.

In general, Women's Day activities around the world comprise of leadership development sessions, career workshops and corporate citizenship events which are held across six continents - in eight cities in the United States and in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Spain, South Africa and the UK.
So let us make a difference, think globally and act locally !! Make everyday International Women's Day. Do your bit to ensure that the future for girls is bright, equal, safe and rewarding.

Our very own signature campaign 'Educating Sita' is Sigi's way of contributing to society by launching a propaganda to protect and enhance the status of women in India through the medium of education. On this International Women's Day, may we request all you viewers of Sitagita to take part in this campaign and affix your valuable signature to the campaign and make it a grand success!
