The day:

Just a few words about the day - not just another International Women`s day, but a special day that celebrates the power of women`s thoughts, voices and deeds. To quote a few lines from a UN development fund for women`s report:

International Women`s Day 2004 this year is a crucial period for women. This year marks the beginning of worldwide preparations to commemorate, in 2005, the 10th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference of Women in Beijing. The largest conference in the history of the United Nations, this conference mobilized the global women`s movement into strategic alliances and collective power.

In recent years, there has been a growth in women`s networks across the world, proof that women are coming together to be heard - on the frontlines in their communities, in government and national institutions, in international fora and through the media, their voices are not only those of victims, but of survivors, leaders, advocates, and change agents.

We know the power of women`s voices.

To make a real difference, we have to transform words into action and results..

The Award:

Sitagita.com, is a portal that is every thinking woman`s online destination, whose mission it is to empower women with knowledge. The C.P.Ramaswami Aiyer Foundation, Chennai is the hub of many glorious activities an projects pertaining to The Environment and other issues . Dr.Nanditha Krishna, its Director, need no introduction.

This award has been instituted jointly by these two organizations that exist showing the power of women, catering to the needs of women and society at large.

The award is given to women of mettle. Leaders and achievers, great human beings - in short, exemlplary women.

The recipient:

Sometimes, an award is an embellishment to the recipient. Sometimes, the recipient glorifies the award. It has been a proud tradition for us at Sitagita, to honour women of mettle. Women who decorate our award. The C.P.Ramaswami Aiyar Foundation and Sitagita are proud to jointly confer the title `Woman Achiever of the year -2004` to Dr.Kamala Selvaraj.

We are happy to honour the harbinger of hope for the hope-less.

Dr. Kamala Selvaraj has been proclaimed `an angel` for hundreds of childless couples. Many come to the GG Hospital, Nungambakkam - whose maternity and childcare section is headed by her for 18 years now - in search of solution and the success rate is very high.

Right in the heart of the city of Chennai is Dr.Kamala Selvaraj`s dream project, the "Fertility Research Centre", pioneering Assisted Reproductive Technology with a state-of-the-art JVT laboratory.

Dr.Kamala Selvaraj has had many achievements to her credit.

First GIFT baby in South India, First PROST twins in South India, First Surrogate Baby of India, First test tube baby to a 50 -year - old woman put on HRT in India .. the list is amazingly long. She has published papers, hold International records, has won the Seva Ratna..

Efficient and dedicated Medical practitioner, Manager and Administrator par excellence, we are proud to honour a `complete woman`, a daughter of Chennai and a citizen of the world.
