On Sunday, the 19th of October, all roads led to Rome. And rightly so!The beatification of one of the world's most noble souls was held in the Vatican. The beatification is the final step towards sainthood. But, to many in the world, Mother Teresa was always a saint. Her life has and will be a inspiration to all who who believe in the power of selfless devotion and love. Her frail figure in the classic white and blue Sari belied her mental courage and strength. To the Sisters of the Missionaries of Charity, she was a figure of courage. And to millions of suffering human beings, she was the figure of hope.
And to Indians, she was and will continue to be 'Mother'. A mother full of compassion and devotion to the needs of her children, all seven billion of them.

It is right that on the occasion of this momemtous honour bestowed on Mother Teresa, we should remember and follow her thoughts and philosophy of life.

These are the words of Mother Teresa:

On a woman she found on a Calcutta street: "I knew she was dying. After I did what I could, she took my hand, gave me a beautiful smile and thanked me. She gave me more than I gave her."

On happiness: "Happiness is the sign of a generous person. It is often the mantle of self-sacrifice. Joy is the surest way to announce Christianity to the world."

On forgiveness: "Forgiveness offers us a clean heart, and people will be 100 times better after it."

On the poor: "(They) don't need pity; they need love and compassion. If you don't know them, you don't love them and don't serve them. "

On service to God: "Give yourself fully to God. He will use you to accomplish great things on the condition that you believe much more in His love than in your own weakness."

On her order: "If the rich people can have the full service and devotion of so many nuns and priests, surely the poorest of the poor and the lowest of the low can have the love and devotion of us few. `The Slum Sister' they call me, and I am glad to be just that for His love and glory."

On the family: "The family is a precious and beautiful gift of God, and let us make sure that we never destroy this beautiful gift but keep the family united through prayer, love and sacrifice. "

On sacrifice: "A sacrifice to be real must cost, must hurt, must empty ourselves. The fruit of silence is prayer, the fruit of prayer is faith, the fruit of faith is love, the fruit of love is service, the fruit of service is peace. "

A prayer she composed:

Make us worthy, Lord,

To serve our fellow men

Throughout the world who live and die

In poverty or hunger.

Give them, through our hands

This day their daily bread,

And by our understanding love,

Give peace and joy.
