Don't attract attention to yourself

• Keep your voice down. To a mere whisper if possible. The louder you talk, the more you will be overheard. The difference in the way you talk, your plans to sight see, where you can eat is a dead give away that you don't belong there. These little things will make you a target.

• Try to blend into the country. Do try to make your clothing similar to theirs. If you are parading down in a Sari or Salwar, you're obviously giving yourself away.

• Do your homework before you arrive. Know something about the city you are visiting - what you need to see, the cheapest mode of transport and the safe places to eat in. Once you seem self-assured, people won't try to take advantage of you.

• Try to learn some of the local culture too. Importantly learn what is not acceptable. Don't offend people by doing what they feel is blatantly bad mannered. Even if it means nothing to you.

• Always carry around your medication. While travelling you need to watch out against diarrhoea, headaches, stomach upsets and dehydration. And any other ailment you are susceptible to. Always carry the appropriate medicine with you.

• If you are travelling to a tropical location, try to take it easy during the extreme heat of midday. Don't expose yourself to the sun's direct rays.

• Wear shoes that are comfortable to walk around in all day long. No matter how trendy your footwear normally is, it is recommended that you settle for comfort while travelling.

• Beware of bugs. A lot of places house insects that can really hurt you. Aromatic oils, especially lavender keep many insects away. Carry a small bottle around and rub a few drops on yourself every now and then.

• Beware of people who follow you and try to offer you excellent deals. They are trying to take you for a ride.
