There are many things
you have to keep in mind when you are travelling, whether in India or abroad. If travelling within India, you know it is tropical
clime everywhere except for the hill stations where you can bask in lovely weather all day. But going abroad is a different cup of
tea. You have to first familiarise yourself with the weather conditions in the places you have selected to travel to and pack your
clothes accordingly. Go on the Net and look for information - it is generally quite easy to find. Once you glean information about
your destination, you can begin your packing in a wise and planned manner.
We will begin with the selection of an
appropriate suitcase. If you are carrying fragile gifts for your friends or relatives, obviously you have to go in for a hard case,
but if there is nothing breakable, you can go in for a soft luggage that will hold more as it can expand considerably.
It is
important to travel light. International airports expect you to handle your luggage on your own and heavy boxes in addition to hand
luggage will pose a real problem especially if you are travelling by yourself.
So, how do you pack light? The first thing
that you, as a woman, have to cut out on is make-up. Surely, you do not need too many cosmetics - and these days there are
cosmetics available for each individual part of your face and body! Go light on make-up. Pack only essentials. Pare it down to a
lipstick that you can use with all shades of clothes, a kohl pencil, a moisturiser and a blush. You can pack an oil free foundation
if you are planning evenings out. A shampoo and conditioner combo will save space. All these should be packed in a lined bag that
will prevent spills from spoiling your clothes.
First, put out all the clothes you think you will need. Cut out at least
half of that number. You will find that you need far less clothes when you are travelling - pack all and when you return, you will
find that you have not used at least half of what you had packed! If you are comfortable with wearing trousers, just pack two basic
shades that you can wear with different shirts. Shirts can be folded in half along the length with the sleeves tucked in and then
rolled from the bottom up. This will prevent wrinkling to a great extent. Same rule goes for salwar kurtas. Take two common shades
of salwars that can be teamed with about 4 or 5 kurtas. Pack just one dressy outfit to wear on an evening out or to a function.
Always pack only what you enjoy wearing and are comfortable in.
Pack about two/three pairs of underwear and three pairs of
socks. Wash nightly and reuse. Reducing these will save you space and weight in your suitcase. Don't forget to carry some detergent
sachets.
Towels should be of the thin variety that will dry easily. Face/body wash in tubes are now available. Carry these
instead of soap bars that may leave a residue on your clothes when packed wet.
Do not carry heavy books and magazines.
Remember you are going to be your own porter!
Split your money - put some in your suitcase and carry some in your bag.
Always keep a copy of your passport in your box. This will prove handy if your purse gets stolen.
Carry some eatables like
biscuits or meal bars. You never know when you will need them.
Leave some space in your box for things you might collect
from the places you are visiting.
Before you leave, tie a bright ribbon on your suitcase handle. It will help you to
identify it easily when you are rushing from one terminal to another in airports.
And finally, ENJOY your trip and relax!
You have packed light and right and nothing can go wrong now!
