Eco-tourism may be the buzzword today, but it is also a reality and the need of the hour! Eco-tourism is best described as an eco-friendly nature based tourism for people to admire and enjoy tourism at its natural best. It includes keeping in mind the conservation of the natural environment and sustainability and the well being of local people.

Human interference and urbanization have both contributed to ecological decay and decline. The objectives of eco-tourism are

  • Rural development
  • Encouraging "natural" tours
  • Providing recreation through nature
  • Conserving wildlife, flora and fauna
  • Generating employment and income
  • Increasing awareness of environmental issues
  • Providing funds for natural resource and nature conservation

Responsible Tourism

Eco-tourism or green tourism is undoubtedly Responsible Tourism. This includes being responsible for the environment and conservation of natural resources. You can be a responsible tourist. Find out how..

  • Say "No" to plastic. Discarded plastic can pose a threat to the environment and human health.
  • Choose eco-friendly hotels to stay in
  • Find out if the hotel you are staying in believes in and practices waste management and recycling
  • Minimize water and energy usage
  • Choose environmentally responsible tour operators
  • Buy local arts and crafts
  • Eat local rather than imported food.
  • Stay away from endangered products sold locally eg. Corals, snake skin etc.

Responsible Tourism is not a product. It is up to each and every one of us to practice responsible tourism, after which, it may still take years to make a difference. Tourism should ideally contribute to socio-economic development by supporting the conservation of natural and cultural heritage. YOU can make a difference! If you have stories about having practiced "green" tourism or responsible tourism, blog in!
