Apart from its beaches this place is also famed for its churches, monasteries, convents and a vivacious Portuguese culture that still continues to be strong in this region. The colourful history of this place would give an idea of the splendour it once boasted.

Basilica of Bom Jesus

This famous mausoleum contains the remains of St Francis Xavier, who visited these parts in 1541. Ever since then, it is the centre of all the Roman Catholic festivities here, including the annual carnival. The remains of the saint is kept in a silver casket which is publicly displayed once in ten years. A modern art gallery is attached to the Basilica.

Se Cathedral

This Gothic cathedral is one of the largest church in Goa. One of its tower houses the "Golden Bell", the largest in this region. A "must see" for every tourist for its old world charm.

Church of Saint Francis of Assisi

One of the architectural delights of this church is its intricately carved wood work, elaborate murals and a floor made of sculptured gravestones. There is also a museum of archaeology adjoining the church - even the walls of the church have figures which reflect the ancient Portuguese connection.

The land is spotted with numerous churches - most of them in ruins - and it would take a visitor nearly four days to visit each one of them. Here are some of the oldest churches in Goa: Church of Our Lady Rosary (circa 1510), Church of Saint Alex Curtorium and the Church of Our Lady Rosary. Apart from the numerous churches, the other places connected with the religious history of this place are the Nunnery of Saint Monica and the Reis Magos.
