Tourism has undergone a sea change today. Gone are the
days when travelers were content with picture pretty buffets, fine dining, gated resorts, the perfect
tan, run-of-the-mill souvenirs, or organized sight-seeing tours. People want more. And they want it NOW! High on the list is
Adventure Tourism- its all about experiencing something "different".
Today's tourist wants to go white water rafting in the Ganges, bungee jumping in Bangkok, scuba diving in the Maldives, trekking across South American peaks, camping on Himalayan slopes and lots more. In short, they want to make their vacation memorable, different and meaningful. Adventure tourism is the fastest growing segment of travel.
Lets find out what's hot...
Girlfriend Groups are catching on. More women prefer to travel with other like-minded women today. Specialized tours are being organized for adventurous women, whether it is to treks from Pokhran or kayaking /canoeing / camping tours. Women today are a force to reckon with: they are economically independent, and are quite happy to make a choice when it comes to spending a vacation. Needless to say, they are also happy to leabve the men at home and take a holiday "from" the family!
Discovery Travellers are happiest when sailing down to the South Pole, cruising past Alaskan polar bears or surveying coral reefs from up close. There is a Christopher Columbus latent in most people. The yearning to discover, to take an expedition and travel to lesser-travelled-to lands seems tempting. What is interesting to note, is the fact, that all this is a possibility today.
The Call of the Wild is no longer limited to the jungles. Adventurous and brave families are taking jungle safaris and trekking through forests - in the hope of spotting the elusive lion, feeding the cheetahs in Nigeria or observing the rhinocerous. The city animals are now venturing out to see the real animals. Is the monotony of the concrete jungle catching up?
Sea-farers are happy to navigate in uncharted waters. Whether it's seeing the underwater marine life, surfing on Hawaiian beaches, para-gliding across the beaches of Thailand or surveying the Sri Lankan coral reefs in glass bottomed boats. Perhaps only scuba diving requires a high level of fitness and specific training, otherwise the sea farers can swim in troubled waters, at their own risk.
Today's traveler seeks fun and value for money. The spirit of travel is different from what it used to be. Travel is looked upon as a great de-stresser and the overstressed people of today are latching on.
