Breaking into homes and de-camping with jewellery takes place everyday and the newspapers are full of such news. Apart from being a
traumatic experience for the inmates, valuable assets, which would have taken a lot of sacrifice to accumulate, are lost. So, it is
wise to insure your home and household items at a small cost.
The General Insurance Corporation sells the Comprehensive
Householder plan that promises to take care of your home and its contents. It is an annual plan, which means that you pay premium
once a year. The Householders policy covers 10 sections at reasonable premium rates.
You can insure your house (if it is
your own) and its contents against fire and allied perils (premium 65 paise per Rs.1, 000) and burglary (Rs.2.40 per Rs.1, 000).
You can also take a cover for jewellery and valuables (Rs.10.05 per Rs.1, 000), domestic appliances like mixers and grinders
(Rs.2.50 per Rs.1, 000), televisions and audio systems (Rs.10.05 per Rs.1, 000), and baggage while travelling (Rs.7.55 per Rs.1,
000), among other things.
