They are normally freelancers whose job involves accompanying tourists to their destination and looking after their needs while travelling. Big travel and tour agencies specialise in tours from certain parts of the world. And therefore they employ travel guides who are fluent in many foreign languages. Knowledge of Japanese or even Chinese places a premium on such guides.

However, if the agency is not a well known one, than a smattering of different languages can be useful. But what is required is a thorough knowledge of history and geography. Tour operators or local tourism departments often employ professional guides who have a thorough knowledge not just of history or geography but are quite well versed in Indian culture and also spirituality. This is because the tourist wants to know a lot more on these aspects of India.

This job is best suited for people who have been bitten by the travel bug as it involves a long time out from your base.
