The most significant feature of a career in the hotel industry is that everyone can aim for the top slot of a general manager irrespective of the level at which he/she joins. Industrial growth and promotion of tourism has made the hotel industry one of the fastest growing sectors of the Indian economy. However, unlike the mistaken general notion, this career is not all about glitz and glamour only. Instead it involves a lot of labour and hard work.

Qualifications: Good management, personnel and communication skills, a temperament that has the ability to remain calm and smiling under the most trying and provocative circumstances. Bright, young, confident people with pleasing and extrovert personalities. Knowledge of a foreign language is an added asset.

Eligibility: Minimum qualifications: +2.

However, training can also begin after graduation. After +2 candidates have to appear for an entrance examination and then an interview conducted by the National Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology. A joint entrance exam is held for admission to 11 institutes located all over India - at Chennai, Mumbai, Calcutta, Hyderabad, Delhi, Srinagar, Lucknow, Bhubaneshwar, Goa, Ahmedabad and Bangalore.

Course: The 3 year diploma or degree course includes principles of management, finance, economics, sales and marketing, catering, production theory, etc. On the job training is also available in some hotels.
