The main areas of work in the tea industry include plantation work, auctioning work and marketing.

Personnel involved in the plantations nurture the tea plants. The finer tasks performed include preparing the soil, applying the appropriate fertilisers, choosing the right variety best suited for the prevailing conditions and supervising the pinching and plucking of the leaves. One special area of skill would be managing plantation labour.

In the factories, the planters need to supervise the cutting, tearing and curling, in short, the processing of the leaves. Most of the plantation owners have their own processing factories. The planters are also expected to supervise the packing of the processed leaves for despatch to the auction centres.

Till recently plantation managers were men. But around 5 years ago Tata Tea Limited were the first to employ women managers on their plantations.

The draw back in this kind of job is of course, the lonely times on huge plantations. The only entertainment would be going to the Club sponsored by the plantation company. Many times the kids will have to be away at boarding schools, because the plantations do not offer good schooling in the vicinity.
