Eligibility:

  • For a three-year LLB degree course    a graduation in any discipline with 50 per cent marks.
  • For a five-year law course    10+2.

Entrance Test:

Delhi University: Conducts an entrance test to admit students into its law course on the basis of their performance. It comprises objective, multiple-choice papers of general awareness and legal aptitude. It also tests general knowledge in law, analytical reasoning, current events of national and international importance with special reference to law, general sciences, and history of India, geography, Indian policy and economy.

The Law Faculty in DU has 1,500 seats out of which 22.5 per cent seats are reserved for SC and ST candidates. In addition, three percent of the seats are reserved for the physically handicapped. The cost of the course is Rs. 4,500. There are three law centres:

The Campus Law Centre (DU) where classes are held between 8 am to 2 pm;

Law Centre I, again on the Campus, where the timings for the classes  are between 3pm and 9pm;

Law Centre II, housed in ASRD College, Dhaula Kuan, New Delhi which holds evening classes from 6pm to 9pm.

Post Course Apprenticeships:

After the three year LLB degree course one can enroll with the Bar and practice in any court as an advocate. There is no age bar for enrollment. The Supreme Court has struck down a rule requiring an LLB degree holder to register with the Bar before attaining the age of 45 years. The compulsory requirement of one-year apprenticeship before enrollment, introduced by the Bar Council of India, has also been struck down.

Specialisation:

For higher studies and specialisation, the post graduate (LLM) degree course is available at the law faculty of DU. The duration of this course for part-timers is three years. Classes are held in the evening. It costs around Rs. 4,500. The cost of a regular two-year course is about Rs. 3000. The LLM has 12 subjects and a dissertation to be completed in 2 years. 500 law colleges and universities in India offer the LLM professional course. An advocate can specialise in any particular branch of law depending on his aptitude.

Employment Opportunities:

Liberalisation has opened up new vistas for the law professionals. Lawyers are very much in demand in the industry as negotiators and law officers.  Similarly, big companies, after imparting in-house training, also engage lawyers for their corporate activities. Law degree holders can join the armed forces to man their legal systems. Public and banking sectors need law graduates as trainees or probationary law officers. The government also appoints legal professionals as public prosecutors, solicitors, deputy or additional advocates    general or even advocates-general. It also needs law officers, legal advisors and legal assistants to man many of its departments. The state judicial service is another avenue to which recruitment is made through a competitive examination. Selected candidates are appointed as sub-judges or munsifs. They may also become chief judicial magistrates.
