Sound files (WAV) are huge and occupy space. In contrast, MP3 condenses the audio and produces sound of near-CD quality in about one-twelfth of the space of a WAV file. This means MP3 gives room for around 200-250 audio clips, allowing a space of about 1.5-MB to 2.0 MB for each audio clip.

MP3 allows you to listen to music over the internet. Currently free, the hot debate is whether MP3 infringes copyrights. This is because MP3 files are mostly copied from audio CDs that have copyrights and then converted to MP3 for formatting.

It is predicted that MP3 will spell the end of the music industry. Artistes with their bands will cut out the middlemen by putting their music on the Internet, and communicate directly with their audience, leaving the hapless music industry quite worried.

The benefactor is, as usual, the consumer!
