Gemmology is defined as the science that deals with the study of gems. It is a highly scientific and technical task, requiring efficient manpower for identifying, sorting and grading the gems. The properties of the gems should be known and more importantly, which metals and gems are compatible. The major tasks of jewellers are to create new designs of jewellery using gold, silver, other metals, as well as valuable gems.

You can either be a manufacturer, designer or a marketing person; and sometimes all three.

  • Manufacture - involves the entire process of cleaning, grinding, polishing the gem to sorting and engraving it; the jewellery is also moulded and the cavities filled in using wax injections. Following this, embedding and de-waxing take place. Lastly, the molten metal is poured into huge blast furnaces.

  • Design - This area employs designers who are knowledgeable about the market demands and able to cater to their needs. They can either work for a single company or as freelancers.

  • Marketing - This is where there is direct contact with the customers; it involves the selling and advertising of precious, semi-precious jewellery for the domestic market, as well as for export. Different sectors function for different purposes - many trading organisations deal in this line of marketing and export of jewellery; some export houses work only for jewellery export and are therefore completely mechanised, while some sectors work for the domestic market (requiring skilled manpower).
