The Gemmological Institute of India was established in 1971 by the Gem & Jewellery Exporters' Association with a view to develop, promote and propagate the scientific study of gemstones in India and thereby boost the exports of Gem and Jewellery items from India.

Jewellery Technology Course

This Polytechnic has executed a joint project with the World Gold Council, a non-profit organisation involved in the promotional activities to increase consumption of gold.

These courses cater to the needs of the jewellers and also facilitate the entry of modern jewellery making process, which can replace a few of the obsolete and unsafe work practices, which are followed currently. It also aims at imparting knowledge on reducing gold loss and improving gold recovery.

Of the eight courses that are to be offered at this Polytechnic, 2 courses commenced in August 1997 i.e., Gold Smithing and Stone setting course.

Indian Diamond Institute (IDI) is a jointly aided institution by the Ministry of Commerce, Govt. of India and Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC). The Indian Diamond Institute, Surat, is conducting Post Graduate Diploma/Diploma/Certificate level courses in diamonds, coloured gemstones and machine cast jewellery. Besides imparting training, it is also undertaking R & D and consultancy services.

The Institute has a Gemmological Testing Lab in its R & D Section which apart from providing gemmological studies training, examines gemstones received from the industry and issues reports with respect to authenticity of the given gems and their properties.
