Take your pick. The industry has become very specialised with specialisation taking place in every aspect of the industry. Jewellery manufacture is a long process.

  • Gemmologists test, identify the specifications of the precious and semi-precious gems (weight, size and form) and identify the methods needed to alter the colour and look of the gems.

  • Gem Grinders work on the gem and grind it down to the required measurements, using machines. This process requires meticulous efforts and constant checking, since a slight crack can render the gem useless.

  • Gem Polishers work on polish wheels (mechanical or manual) to smoothen out the gems.

  • Gem Sorters have gained importance with the coming of fibreglass. This job is quite tedious since the sorter needs to separate the gems from the rough stones and cut them according to size. Different methods are used for this process such as sifting alluvial material (for a majority of gems like rubies and diamonds) and then collecting and cleaning the gems.

  • Jewel Setters lay out the gems according to the required design of the ornament..

  • Engravers need to be impeccable at their work, for their task demands quality and good taste. The work deals with engraving designs and patterns on the jewellery, with the help of chisels and other hand tools. Understandably, this task is difficult since mistakes cannot be rectified easily. Dyes are used for engraving or embossing the designs.

  • Scientists/Researchers have the unique job of 'creating' gems out of water and other complex substances. Once the constituents of the real gems are known, the same materials can be used to chemically produce these artificial or synthetic gemstones.
