Like any career that is based on creativity and talent, this one too takes plenty of hard work and diligence to be
able to be successful. Success rarely happens overnight. Sometimes it may take years of toil and little recognition but it is important
never to give up. Set your goals. Have realistic expectations and you will not be disappointed. Naturally, you will be expected to put
in hard work at the entry level before you work your way up the ladder. Try to get noticed through your work. Try to gain as much
industry experience as possible and put together your portfolio in an attractive and appealing manner.
Concentrate on your portfolio
Start by showcasing all your best work. It is the best way to gain entry into a fashion school or into a good job in this
vast field. You can get noticed because of your attractive portfolio. Even as you are putting it together, keep in mind the people you are
doing it for. If you want to get into a school for fashion, keep in mind the school requirements and all the guidelines. However, if it is
a fashion design job you are trying for, choose what you want to showcase and remember that the presentation is everything. It is very
important to demonstrate your fashion design ability, creativity and your unique talent.
For this, see that you include attractive sketches that reveal your ability to record on the spot, your knowledge of
colour and textiles, design development and your problem solving skills. On the whole give it a unique look even while it showcases all
your talent and ability.
As an apprentice / intern
Get under a good designer and learn the ropes. Nothing like an experienced hand guiding you as a fresher. Your internship
can help give you a kind of recognition and will give you the necessary experience in the industry as well as help build your resume. You
may not be paid much but where you intern matters in your resume and of course what you get to learn from an experienced hand will be
phenomenal.
What you have to keep in mind is the fact that competition in this field is very high, so if you intern with a well known name, you are
already on the first rung of your career. If still a student, your college`s industry connections will surely help you in your search for
a job. Whatever it is, use all your resources. Make a survey of fashion houses and find out what they are looking for. Prepare your
portfolio accordingly.
Never be scared of starting small. Most big names had humble beginnings and climbed their way up the success ladder. Of
course you must think of the broad picture but remember to begin with a goal that you can achieve. Use your creativity and you will find
that your portfolio and experience will certainly help. Persevere, be focused and never get discouraged. Like we`ve said earlier, this
career is not for the faint-hearted. Be determined to succeed. It will eventually pay off.
