Do you forget your own code of conduct and stoop to her level? Do you ignore her and hope that she will become tired because you are unresponsive? What do you do?

  • First, calm yourself down; don't let your temper get the better of you.
  • Avoid a showdown until it becomes a little too much.
  • Whether it is verbal abuse or aggressiveness, talk to the person in a calm manner and let her know that you will not take it lying down.
  • Have a quiet and calm discussion in your own room or hers. Make sure that others are not present.
  • You have got together with this person to solve a problem and not escalate it. Having others present is not going to help the situation.
  • Don't talk about the person's behaviour but about the impact that the behaviour has on you. Don't say, "I have a lot of complaints about you. I think you are rude. I didn't like it when you interrupted me at the client meeting that we had yesterday."
  • Instead say, "Meena, (yes, calling the person by their name is very important) I wish you would have let me finish what I was saying at the meeting yesterday. I did have something important to say. I become confused when you do such things. In fact, I become so confused that I find it difficult to listen to anything after that."
  • If you are unable to tackle the person, don't despair. Talk to a mature colleague and find out how you can solve the problem. Take a feedback. Are you triggering the hostile attitude? Is your body language or voice equally arrogant?
  • Talk to your immediate boss. Don't complain but once again hint at the stress it is causing in your work life.
  • You have to fight for your rights and your fundamental right is to be treated with respect.
  • But remember, handle the situation without making a scene! You will be appreciated for it.
