Women don't negotiate salaries as well as men. Is this true?

Probably yes, as they are not conditioned to demand many a time there is a feeling they need a certain flexibility and hence they don't negotiate. Though they can deliver equally well, there is a fear that if they negotiate too much the organization will also demand a lot.

Research reveals that those who negotiated received 7-8 per cent more than what they were initially offered.

Women like being valued. For them the atmosphere at work and relationship with the company count more. Women don't always work to earn a packet. The reasons are unprofessional they work to evolve, to be themselves. It is not that they can't discuss money; they don't make that an issue. Pay is incidental.

Cultural Factors

The cultural factors too play an important role in women not demanding what they are worth. Diffidence and unquestioning acceptance are major cultural factors in our society. More than the pay package, women want recognition and opportunities to grow.

Women also shy away from discussing pay packages as talking money is considered bad. Relative to men, a woman's self-concept is low. They nurse an underlying guilt about marriage and work.

Of course, there are exceptions to the rule, some women use strong negotiating skills from both sides of the table. Especially, in the IT sector. They have evolutionary, inbuilt social graces that they use to great advantage.

Salary Negotiation is a very vital part of the recruitment process.

  • Here are some useful salary negotiation tips to help you bargain optimum salary for yourself.

It is important that you have an idea about your worth. Do an objective analysis of your positive and negative attributes. Find out what the company wants and whether you are suitable for the job. This will give you a good idea about your worth and you can negotiate accordingly.

  • Don't ask about salary. Let employers make a first offer.

Once your employer evinces interest in employing you, it will be easier to negotiate since you know that the company wants you on board.

  • Show your experience and expertise. Put your past experiences on the table and let the employer see exactly why you are fit for the position. Hands-on experience is a very efficient salary-negotiating tool.
  • Look at the whole package subjectively. Some companies have their hands tied when it comes to salary, but may have a number of other perks / benefits that will raise your overall remuneration to a figure that meets your expectations. For example you may get a company car, free accommodation, or the opportunity for flexible working or working from home.

Ask for a fair amount. It is important to maintain cordial relations. Be prepared to compromise and settle for a middle path. If you ask for six benefits and the company comes back with two, settle for three or four.
Know your minimum expected salary. Figure out beforehand how low you will go. Sometimes no amount of negotiation will get you what you want. If it does not meet your needs, it is time to stop rather than end up with the wrong deal.
