True, it's been awhile since you've seen the inside of an office. It might take time to get used to working
hours again. The family has kind of got used to having you at home and doing things for them at any given time. Going back to work
will be a new experience not only for you but for the whole family. How then do you make this change? It has to be a smooth transition
so that the entire household also has a chance to adapt to the idea and things at home also continue to run smoothly.
To begin
at the very beginning.. you need to sit with your family and discuss this issue openly. They need time to understand that you will no
longer be available round the clock as you were as a stay at home Mom. Tell them about your desire to get back to being a working
woman. If you've already received a job offer, it is often easier to convince them as the decision will have to be taken immediately.
The first thing they have to realise is that now the whole family has to work together and not depend solely on you to sort out
matters.
As a responsible parent, you will have to rearrange your schedule so as to be able to participate in your kids'
activities even while you cope with your new job. You will soon realise that it will take all your skills to juggle work and home
without either of these suffering - you will have to accommodate everyone and do well in your job. It will remain the hardest thing
you do for a long time.
Set up a proper schedule that you can follow for all your household chores and errands. This will give
you time to attend to your kids' activities also. You will have to understand that you are no longer flexible with your time - and
this, more than anything else, will rid you of any guilt feeling that you may have developed. Once your decision to get back to work
has been accepted, the family has to come to terms with the fact that things at home will no longer be the same. You may not be able
to participate in all the children's activities and events, nor will you be there to solve every little problem at home. After all,
getting back to work after a long sabbatical means that your mind, body and your family need to adjust to this change. Everyone has to
cooperate with you till you settle into some kind of a routine that you can follow and which all are comfortable with.
As a
working Mom, you have to work out a new schedule, learn to run your household differently - like with a remote control most of the
time - as well as find time to spend with your family. You have to get used to the idea that you have to be at some place at a certain
time for a certain reason every day. Definitely a tall order, but not something that your determination to succeed cannot overcome!
Time, they say, is the best healer, and time will make your family adjust to the new you faster than you think. Everyone will soon get
used to the idea that you are now a working woman and soon the dependence on you as a housewife and a stay at home Mom will be a thing
of the past. It is your new avatar that will now serve to highlight your competence and your ability to combine two roles with total
professional ease.
So, if you have been contemplating this dual role, now is the time to take that first step forward - you
need to do this for yourself!
