Shruthi had been working in a BPO for about two years and she was seriously considering quitting her job. "The night shifts were taking a toll on me, I was too stressed out. All this worried my parents too and they wanted me to put in my papers." But she loved her work and since she had already spent two years in the company, she did not want to forgo the promotion and benefits due to her..

Tackling Shifts

Shruti decided to consult her family doctor for advice on the best way to tackle the situation. "He told me to concentrate on getting my quota of sleep after my night shifts and to avoid the intake of too much of coffee and junk food, he also urged me to talk to my supervisors to find out whether the shifts could be fixed for a longer period of time, say a fortnight or month to avoid frequent shift rotation."

She spoke to her seniors who took the matter to the management. The company recognized the problem and took the decision to allot shifts on a monthly basis rather than the present weekly basis. Shruti and her colleagues are now happy with the new arrangement. "When we get night shift for a month, we simply reverse our clocks. Just as the doctor recommended I take care to see that I get the necessary hours of sleep after coming from work, even if it means closing the curtains and darkening the room to simulate night time."

Good Nutrition

Shruti also took the doctor's advice of eating healthy, "I carry a salad to work everyday. Besides being easy to put together, I have the satisfaction of getting some good nutrition instead of drinking endless cups of coffee or cola during break times."

Excessive intake of caffeine, use of sedatives and self medications can cause havoc on the health and should be avoided at all costs say doctors. Taking nutritious foods at regular timings, giving body adequate time to rest and rejuvenate and maintaining necessary hours of sleep is essential to keep body fit and healthy.
