Lakshmibai, the Rani of Jhansi was the queen of the Maratha-ruled princely state of Jhansi, situated in the north-central part of India. She was one of the leading figures of the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and for Indian nationalists a symbol of resistance to the rule of the British East India Company in the subcontinent. Named as Manikarnika, she was married to the Maharaja of Jhansi, Raja Gangadhar Rao, in 1842 and was afterwards called Lakshmibai
For strengthening the defense of Jhansi Rani Lakshmi Bai assembled an army of rebellions, which also included women. For this great cause she was supported by brave warriors like Gulam Gaus Khan, Dost Khan, Khuda Baksh, Sunder-Mundar, Kashi Bai, Lala Bhau Bakshi, Moti Bai, Deewan Raghunath singh and Deewan Jawahar Singh. She assembled 14,000 rebels and organized an army for the defense of the city.
In March 1858, Rani Lakshmibai's army decided to fight the attacking British army. They fought very bravely, even though Jhansi lost to the British forces. As the opponent entered Jhansi, she tied her infant son to her back and fought bravely using two swords with both her hands. She escaped to the fortress of Kalpi under the cover of darkness and was accompanied by many other rebellions. As she departed to Gwalior, a fierce battle was fought between the British and the Rani's army.
On the unfortunate day of 18th June of 1858, this great warrior martyred her life for India's freedom. |
