The family next door, our new neighbours, are from Kerala. Every female in that house is perpetually donning gold jewellery, which is found unusual by us. Is it their religious compulsion or something? |

The culture in Kerala is such that all girls are expected to be wearing gold jewellery in everyday life. As they come of age, that is, as they become old enough to marry, it is almost a social compulsion to wear gold chains and ear rings. Even teenagers are reprimanded by elders if seen bare necked. A woman’s social status in Kerala is indicated by the amount of gold she adorns herself with. If you visit Kerala, you will spot females of all ages, ranging from school going girls to grown up women, wearing gold chains, more than one too at times! |
