Chennai is a mix of culture, tradition and modern trends... Ethnic embroidery (aari or kundan) on modern wear would be a fast moving option in Chennai. Similar chennai-specific idea would be block printing on kancheevaram silk sarees, dry washing services for silk sarees, etc.

On the food front... Chennai is a haven for beverage outlets. Given the hot weather, a food outlet that speacializes in any kind of beverages - tender coconut, soft drinks, exotic mocktails, fruit juices, etc would be a definite hit.

On the arts and crafts front, Chennai caters to a wide range of wedding shoppers. The unique gifting trays are widely sought after. Any kind of wedding paranelphia like mappillai umbrellas, seer plates, thank you gifts, decorated mirrors, return paper bags, non-woven fabric bags etc will definitely give a good start.

Hi vivek
Small scale business in Coimbatore could be risky. Chennai is a metropolitan with a wide range of customers and a good amount of floating population. But Coimbatore, though moderen and educated, is kind of a homely nice town. Here word of mouth works far better than novel creative ideas. A person from Coimbatore, who has a very good network of friendsand supporters in Coimbatore can confidently open a small sale business here. For others, even if you have a very creative idea for a startup, a lot depends on how many people you know, how many customers you can personally count on etc.

Networking is the mantra here.. people looking for a new shop ask their friends or relatives for references for a new shop, then in turn ask their other friends etc. Rarely do people see a new shop, become curious or impressed about it, walk in and do business. I think this would apply to a majority of the tier-2 cities and towns in India.

Neverthless, Fast food outlets, branded or designer wear outlets, Music / Dance / Arts / Crafts courses for children, Specific short term art courses for adults (like Tanjore painting, Glass painting etc), Consultancy, Dealerships etc are the best risk-free long term options for Coimbatore start-ups.

Hi ridhima

I have lived in Chennai for Around 4 to 5 years. My native is Coimbatore. I have also lived in Bangalore and a host of other cities in the US. So the lifestyle, people, start ups, ventures, shopping attitudes are things that I keep observing and comparing between the many cities.

I am interested in arts and crafts. So I have been constantly looking for ideas to start a small scale business in the cities that I have lived in :-)  Small scale business, be it a local shop or an online shop, needs a lot of creativity, marketing, financial backing atleast in the first few years. Constantly working it makes one understand a lot about it.
