Dilip Kumar, the veteran Indian film actor was born on 11th December, 1922 in Peshawar(Modern day Pakistan) and his actual name was Muhammad Yousuf Khan. He was born in a Pathan family and his father was a fruit merchant. In the later part of the 1930s, Dilip Kumar and his family shifted to Mumbai. Muhammad Yousuf Khan, as he was known, started working as a canteen owner and dry fruit seller in Pune during the 1940s. When he was spotted by Himanshu Rai and his wife, Devika Rani, the owners of Bombay Talkies, Muhammad Yousuf got a chance to act as the lead actor in the film Jwar Bhata in 1944. It was the Hindi author Bhagwati Charan Varma who gave Muhammad Yousuf the screen name of Dilip Kumar. From that time onwards, Muhammad Yousuf Khan is known to us all as Dilip Kumar. |
