Rani Laxmibai or Jhansi Ki Rani as she was commonly called, was the queen of a province called Jhansi, in modern day Madhya Pradesh. Born in 1828, Laxmibai was given the name of Manikarnika or Manu. Later on after marriage with Raja Gangadhar Rao, the King of Jhansi, she was called Rani Laxmibai. She played an important role in India’s First War for Independence in 1857 and she always provided opposition to the ways of the British East Indian Company. With her skills in archery, horse-riding and self-defense, Jhansi Ki Rani stood up against the East India Company and fought them when after Raja Gangadhar’s death, Laxmibai’s territory was taken over by the company. This happened after Governor-General Lord Dalhousie implemented the Doctrine of Lapse. This made Laxmibai’s adopted son, Damodar Rao an ineligible heir to the throne. Rani Laxmibai had fought valiantly in the battle till her death. Question is-do we still remember our Jhansi Ki Rani?
