When was the first time that Indians revolted against the British rule? I have heard a little about the importance of the year 1857, but not many details are known to me. Would anyone throw light on this? |

In 1857 took place the first war of independence in India. It started in Meerut when soldiers of the East India Company came to know that the paper cartridges they had to bite off were greased with beef and pork. Without the cartridges, their rifles won’t work and biting off these cartridges was against their religious sentiments. Both Hindus as well as Muslims were uncomfortable with this. This unrest, combined with civilian disquiet took the shape of a full-fledged mutiny in which most of Northern India participated. The soldier who brought the animal fat issue to the fore was names “Mangal Pandey”.
Support came from many other quarters in India. Other significant names known from this era are Rani Lakhshmi Bai, Tatya Tope and Bahadur Shah Zafar. Leaders and general public from Bengal, Jhansi, Meerut, Bihar and Rajasthan fought hard to oust the British. By the end of 1857, it was the British who regained their ground. A peace treaty was signed and the revolt almost died. Yet, this remarkable event paved the way for the great struggle of independence which was ultimately achieved by India on 15th august, 1947. |
