Kiran Bedi is the first woman to have become an IPS officer in India. She was born in Amritsar, Punjab and was educated from Chandigarh. After doing her master’s in Political Science, she began her career as a lecturer in Punjab University. Simultaneously, she prepared for civil services examinations and cleared the same. In 1972, she joined the Indian Police Service. During the years of her service, Kiran went through many difficult postings. Everywhere that she was in authority, commendable changes were brought to the society. She shone out bright with her work. She is known as the Iron Lady of India for these reasons. Be it the New Delhi traffic posting, DIG Police in Mizoram, United Nations posting or the post of Inspector General of Prisons in Tihar Jail, Bedi set an example for generations to come. In the year 1988, she completed her Bachelor of Law. She even did her Ph. D. in social sciences in 1993. Her thesis was on “Drug Abuse and Domestic Violence”. During and after her years of service, Kiran Bedi was honoured with innumerable awards from the Indian government as well as from international organizations. After her retirement, she continued to be active in the society as a pillar of change. She found two NGOs which are still active in women empowerment. |
