Daughters in every family are precious beings. They are cherished and pampered by one and all. In India, the male members of family are protective about young girls. The adoration is reflected in the pet names used for the daughters. The most common ones are:

Gudiya- Literally meaning “doll”, this is the most common name for girls in India as for their parents and grandparents, a girl child is almost like their favourite toy.

Munni- This pet name is indicative of the protectiveness for girls. It means “young one”. No matter what age the daughter becomes, she will always be munni for her elders.

Babli, Pinki, Miththi

Doll- With urbanisation, girls are called “doll” too.

I really like the nickname Miththi. My friend calls her little niece by that name, which at times turns into Miththaa or Mitthai :)
