When you are bringing up your child then you should leave no stones unturned in ensuring that your child is a responsible and confident individual. You can start of by listening to his opinions and giving him enough importance as an adult. You should let him make mistakes so that he can learn from it. But it is your duty to make sure that he learns from his mistakes. Let him take his decisions and guide him when he does so. Encourage him to do things on his own so that he can be an independent and confident individual. This will help a lot as he will believe that you have faith in him. Do not be too pushy and over protective about your child. Always boost his confidence but make sure that he is not over confident about things.

I agree with you on this one. Listening is important, we must make it a point to know their day. I want my son to grow independent and confident and there are a lot of tools to obtain that. There are summer camps that cater to self-improvement to kids. They have activities that enables them to be leaders and pushes them to be the best they can be. :)
