You should do some research on internet, however be skeptical. There are lots of agencies/companies that cheat people.

what is the difference between proof-reading and editing?

Proof- reading is checking the spelling,punctuation etc of the typed matter. Editing is improving the content of the write up.

And Eskay! Will not a proof reader improve the content of write up and an editor check the spelling, punctuation, etc ?!

I feel the roles are more or less the same.

Actually editing needs more experience and knowledge of sundry subjects. In simple words one starts as proof reader and in due course of time may be upgraded to editorship.But if you are suitably qualified, you may start as Editor itself.Additionaly,an editor may not like to waste his time in simple chores like spelling & punctuation checking more so there being vast difference in their remunerations.SAMJHE !!!!!!!

Samjheya...But noone can jump to Editor's post directly... Step by step only helps to gain the experience and confidence to handle editors post.

Right on dot. Amongst all of us, only Jaya qualifies for the Editor's post. Rest of us qualify for being the proof readers only, may be I as Senior proof reader owing to my age.
