I have been working for a call centre for the last 6 months. In spite of accent training I am told that my accent is not okay. I come from a very simple background and was never confident talking English. I feel I have come a long way but my team manager says my accent is very local. What should I do? Sometimes I feel very upset about it.- Sumathi

Listen to as much English as you can on TV and the radio. Practise doing loud reading. Tape yourself and then keep practising those sounds that you are not getting right.

There are a number of classes you can enroll in to get a neutral accent. There are certain routine phrases that you use in the call centre. Keep repeating these again and again; tape yourself. Listen to the way you are saying it. Get friends to make comments on it and improve. There is no need to feel depressed though.
