  • Make copies of your travel itinerary. Place a copy inside each piece of luggage. If luggage is lost or picked up by mistake, the chances of finding it are better.

  • Are you worried it would be obvious to an intruder that no one is home when you travel? There are ways to go about fixing this problem. Uncollected milk and mail are a dead give away. Make sure your milk is not delivered. Redirect your mail to your friend's house, or ask your neighbour to collect them for you everyday. Indian women are always obliging with such favours.

  • Leave a lamp turned on so it looks like there's someone home in the evenings. A radio left turned on also provides the sound effects. It will seem more realistic.

  • If you are travelling by car, make sure you have a good supply of torches, food and water. In case there is a break down at night, you should be able to manage till help comes along the next day. Always get foods that preserve well.

  • If you are travelling to another country, it is always prudent to get medical insurance that covers medical costs. It is definitely a lot cheaper and better than falling ill there and trying to pay medical bills out of your own pocket.

  • Ensure your passport is valid for a while. If it is due to expire shortly, you may not be allowed to enter certain countries even though you have a visa. Also make copies of your passport. In case you lose your passport, you can send the copied version to the Embassy and get a duplicate quickly.

  • If you are travelling abroad, learn a few essential phrases of the language spoken in that country. Words like "Hello, Thank you, food, water, restroom, hotel etc" should be learned. They will certainly make your trip an easier one.

  • Always ask the locals for a few tips - be it on sight seeing, shopping, dining out etc. They will be the right ones to help you out.
