> Is your child travelling alone?
If your child is old enough to travel alone on a flight, then here are a few precautions you should keep in mind before putting him on a plane.
- Make sure that all travel arrangements are made well in advance.
- Ensure that whoever picks your child up gets to the airport well in time. If possible also make alternative arrangements in case the person responsible for picking him/her up cannot make it on time. Keep everybody concerned informed about his/her flight schedules.
- Brief your child. Tell him/her exactly what to expect on the flight. Your child should know basic things such as where he/she will sit, how long the flight will be and who will come to the airport to pick him/her up. Give her enough change and money and teach him/her the method of using pay booths in case you don't give her a cell phone.
- Make sure he/she knows about decent and indecent behavior. He/she should also be able to recognise such behavior. It is important to tell him/her that on no account should he/she disclose him/her details to strangers.
- Request the airlines not to seat your child with passengers who are consuming alcohol.
- Identify the flight attendant who will be in charge of your child on the flight and ensure your child gets to know him/her.
- Contact the airline in advance to know of their arrangements for unaccompanied children and let them know if you have any special instructions for your child.
- If the child has to change flights, instruct him/her to be with the flight attendant always.
- Allow the child to carry familiar story books/coloring books/music on board to keep him/her occupied during the flight.
Make sure that the airline authorities have the details of the person, ( his residential/office address, his telephone number etc) coming to pick your child up at the airport. Give these details to your child too.
