  • Take your favourite music along. Play it in the car. Sing along loudly. Spout poetry if you like. Scream out your thoughts. You'll be amazed how your mind moves with you. You drift back in nostalgia. Sometimes unconnected thoughts and dreams filter through. Suddenly you know the solutions to problems that have been haunting you.

  • Enjoy the still countryside, the wide horizons, and the endless skyline. The smell of the earth, the waving fronds of green, farmers dotting the landscape. Sense the peace in the air.

  • Take a journal along. Put down your thoughts and impressions. What were the little inconveniences you encountered? Did you find them quaint? Do those mountain peaks look like giants rearing up to look down on man? Do they attract or repel you? Write down your impressions every now and then.

  • Take little walks by the roadside to ease your cramps. Drink a glass of water. Pluck a fruit off a tree and munch it. Fall into conversation with a yokel.

  • Experience peace within yourself. Living in the moment, for the moment.

  • The differences in culture, diet and attitudes as you cross state borders. Revel in them.

  • Don't hesitate to change your direction and drive on elsewhere.

  • Make sure you have enough water and fuel.
