Objets D'art
Brass, copper and gunmetal objects are sold everywhere. They are worked on or simply beaten at the simplest level. Alternatively, they can be inlaid and enamelled. Bidri work which involves silver inlay work. This kind of silver inlay work is very similar to that of Toledo, Spain.
Intricate work done in wood or marble, ivory and sandalwood is testimony to the skill of the Indian artisan. Marble with inlay work in semi-precious stone (a legacy of the Mughals), and bronze statuettes ( a speciality of the South where the lost wax method of bronze sculpture has been practised for centuries) make for wonderful souvenirs.
Miniatures
Reproductions of miniature paintings are often done on paper, cloth, marble and ivory. These must be chosen carefully keeping the skill, subject and colours of the painting in mind. Popular themes are mythological (the Hindu god Krishna is depicted in various stages of his life) and historical (much emphasis is laid on the amorous aspect of India's medieval historical figures).
Carpets
Kashmiri carpets compare with the best in the world. Crafted in the Persian tradition, they are available in different sizes and can be done on wool and silk. It is probably worth your while to purchase carpets at the larger shops or Government Emporia where you can get a certificate of guarantee. If you are in a mood for a carpet, albeit an inexpensive one, then check out the amazing plethora of sisal, jute and cane mats.
Jewellery
India produced the Kohinoor Diamond. It is also the country which was so renowned for its wealth, that it was plundered time and again for its rich booty. Indians love their jewellery. You can find a huge assortment of jewellery ranging from pricey diamonds to the not-quite-so-pricey silver. Whether it is gold, silver, precious and semi-precious stones, chunky or delicate, simple or complex, traditional and modern, you can get everything in India. The current trend veers towards sleek and modern designs. At formal occasions people tend to favour the traditional. Indian jewellers often hone their craft over several generations and the secrets of the trade are passed on from father to son.
Miscellaneous
Leather is one of India's biggest export commodities. Leather jackets, shoes, wallets and bags are good buys. Cane goods ranging from place mats, rugs, window screens to furniture are the other knick knacks worth picking up during your shopping spree.
What to Watch out for
India has strict laws governing the export of antiques. So, just be extra careful while buying antiques or semi- antiques. Also, watch out for fakes while shopping for ancient artefacts.
Be extra cautious if you are attempting to buy skins or furs. Export of skins and furs is either banned or strictly regulated in India. It is important to get a certificate of legitimate sale and permission for export.
At the risk of sounding cynical, be wary of over-friendly taxi drivers or guides who insist on taking you to a particular shop. Generally, such shops charge more to cover the cost of commissions paid out to these taxi drivers and guides.
Happy Shopping!
For safe and happy shopping, stick to Government Emporia and shops on the approved list of the Department of Tourism. The Central Cottage Industries and the various State Emporia have branches in the major cities. They are a focal point in the display of articles for sale from all parts of India.
At the other end of the spectrum are the teeming bazaars of India. Bargaining in bazaars is an integral part of the Indian experience. Once, if only for the experience, wend your way through a bazaar and see a microcosm of India. And bargain for all you're worth. After all, you have nothing to lose but your voice box!
