Though racially the people of this state are more akin to south Indians they are different in many ways. It was once a major Buddhist center before it relegated to a vassal state. Architectural style is predominantly north Indian with the typical Vimanas, but sculptures have a Dravidian shade.

Sri Jagannath Temple

This twelfth century temple stands majestically on an elevated platform in the heart of the city. Built in a typical Kalinga style, this temple echoes the style of the Sun Temple at Konark. It is famous for its annual festival.

Lalitagiri, Ratnagiri & Udaigiri Temples

These hillock temples are an ancient Buddhist centre for learning.

How to get there: It is located at about 20 km from Cuttack.
