Some of the temples of Kerala have much in common with the styles of neighbouring Tamil Nadu, and are indistinguishable from them. Others were more influenced architecturally by different styles of South India over the centuries and also by various geographical features.
Guruvayoor
By far the most venerated shrine in Kerala, and perhaps in India, is the Krishna temple at Guruvayoor, near Trichur. Parthasarathy temple and the Mammiyur temple are the other temples worth visiting.
How to get there: The nearest airport, Cochin, is 90 kms away. Trichur is the nearest railway station (29 kms).
Trichur
The temple of Vadakkunatha in Trichur attracts pilgrims from all over India. The temple is famous for the spectacular Pooram festival held every year in April/May.
How to get there: Trichur is an important railway station. The nearest airport is Cochin, 74 kms away.
Kaladi
The temple here, situated by the river, has two shrines within. One is dedicated to Sri Sankaracharya and the other to the goddess Saradamba, the local deity. Next to it is a Krishna temple built by the Sankaracharya to replace an ancient one that had been submerged.
How to get there: The nearest airport is Cochin, 45 kms away. The nearest railhead is Angamaly, 10 kms away.
