The Sunderbans

Largely unspoilt, these mangrove forests in the Gangetic deltas of West Bengal are home to some 35 species of mammals including the Royal Bengal tiger. Other important mammals include the fishing cat, smooth-coated otters, pangolin, Bengal fox, chital deer, wild boar, monkeys.... and more than 260 species of birds.

The famous Gangetic dolphins and porpoises are found here. The fish of the region, particularly the Hilsa, are a delicacy in Bengali cuisine. The thick foliage and dense undergrowth weave mystery and one almost expects to see a tiger around the corner.

Countless creeks weave their ways across the deltas and the ecology of this saltwater ecosystem is what makes the Sunderbans so special! Of the 50 species of true mangroves in the world, 26 species are found here.

Jaldapara

A wildlife sanctuary that boasts of it's one horned Rhino and the best bio-diversity in the State, West Bengal can easily be combined with Darjeeling & Sikkim. The Indian bison or gaur and the elephants are frequently sighted. The still luckier ones may encounter the tiger or leopard.

The day starts with an elephant ride and continues with tea garden visits and local tribal dances.

The best time to visit: Between October and March.

Accommodation - Sunderbans--either a forest guest house or a river boat. Jaldapara--the tourist rest house is comfortable and is close to the forest.

Both destinations can be reached from Calcutta and many agents do great packages for reasonable costs.
