Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra rests on the Arabian sea on an island. Mumbai is the virtual centre of Indian trade and commerce, and has a superb harbour which provides the city with the country`s busiest port. The city is dotted with Victorian mansions and grand public buildings which serve as a gentle reminder of the British Raj. Mumbai is also known as the commercial capital of India. The city is known for its chic restaurants, hip, western style bars which offer a wide choice of cuisines like Continental, Chinese and numerous Indian dishes.
With its large migrant population and local enterprise, this city is the most cosmopolitan of the metros in India. It enjoys a distinctly tropical climate and has a new, vibrant culture that reflects the affluence and energy of the people. Renowned as the `Queen of Indian Cities`, Mumbai is well connected with all the major cities in the world.
Gateway of India
Overlooking the Arabian Sea, this monumental arch was built in 1905 to welcome the British monarch, King George V. This 26 metre high stone archway is the first landmark of Mumbai a visitor sees, when arriving by ship. Every evening, crowds gather to watch this landmark of Mumbai. Boat rides can be hired.
Victoria Terminus
This great Gothic building was built in 1887. The building is highly ornamental - both in terms of architectural content and sculpture.
Prince of Wales Museum
Built to commemorate the visit of King George V to India in 1905, the Museum opened only in 1923. The building is set in a stately garden and topped by a massive dome.
Malabar Hill
A famous residential neighbourhood, here you can see the ruins of the ancient Walkeshwar temple (built sometime between 810 and 1260 AD), the Hanging Gardens for a pleasant evening stroll, the Kamala Nehru Park for a view of Chowpatty beach and Marine Drive.
Afghan Church
Built in 1847, this church is dedicated to the British soldiers who fell in the Sindh and the Afghan campaigns of 1838 and 1843.
Chowpatty Beach
It is a popular site for celebration of festivals such as Coconut Day and the Ganesh Chaturthi.
Haji Ali Mosque
The tomb of a Muslim saint who died while on a pilgrimage to Mecca. It is believed that a casket containing his mortal remains floated and came to rest on a rocky bed in the sea, where devotees constructed the tomb and mosque. Can be visited only at low tide.
High Court
It was built in 1878 in the early English Gothic style.
Jain Temple
Built in marble in 1904, the shrine is dedicated to Adinath, the first Tirthankara or apostle. The walls of the temple are adorned with colourful paintings depicting various incidents in the lives of the 24 Tirthankaras of the Jain religion.
Kamla Nehru Park
This is a children`s park built in 1952.The garden offers a panoramic view of Marine Drive and Chowpatty Beach.
Mint
This historical landmark dates back to 1829. You can visit it with prior permission from the Mint Master.
Marine Drive
Now known as Netaji Subhash Road, this is the city`s most famous promenade along the waterfront.
Victoria Gardens
Open daily, except on Wednesday, from 8 am to 6 pm.
Entry fee: Rs. 4.00 (adult) Rs. 2.00 (child under 12 years). Elephant, camel, pony and boat rides available daily from 3 pm to 5 pm. Tel.: 3725799.
