The inner surface of the stomach secrets digestive juices and hydrochloric acid. The strong hydrochloric acid works on the food and digests it. The inner surface of the stomach is protected by mucous coating. Due to the action of certain drugs the protective mucous coating can get weakened. The Helicobacter pylori can also weaken the mucous lining. When the protective mucous coating gets weakened the acid gets through the sensitive lining beneath. A peptic ulcer can be caused by both the bacteria and the acid.
