In the merchant navy, there are three core areas of service—wireless communication, radio and engineering, and navigation. Inside these three areas, people are offered a large number of varied jobs, some of which are at the sea while others on shore. Some of the most sought-after career paths in the merchant navy are as follows:  

Engineering Officer
 – engineering officers are the ones who are qualified marine engineers. These people join as 4th Engineer and finally reach the chief engineer level by moving up the hierarchy from level 4, level 3, level 2 and finally the chief level. However, this is based on the performance of a candidate on board and also on how well the candidate flares in the internal examinations. This department looks after the ship’s main engines in addition to maintaining a check on power generation equipments, air conditioning, etc.

Deck Officer
 – The deck officers are responsible for all activities on the ship in relation to ships navigation, general administration and maintenance of the ship, and loading/unloading of cargo, among others.

Radio Officers
 - The Radio Officers on the ship are responsible for all kind of electronic communication on the ship and also any related records. They also look after the electronic navigation helps like radar, long range navigation equipment, depth measuring devices and global positioning system, etc.
