What is a quotation, or more rightly, a quote as we all call it? Well, we all might be sending lovely quotes through mails and SMSes to our family members, friends, colleagues, but how many of us actually know what a quote really means? Have you ever tried to understand the literal meaning of this term?
The term quotation (or quote) refers to a short note or piece of writing that recognizes somebody’s else’s thoughts or view points. It is generally a sentence or phrase that was evolved by somebody else and we use it in our day-to-day conversation by referring to these words as other’s and giving full credit to the person who originated that quote.
Quotes are very famous and are generally written by people who gain excellence in their respective fields. Because they are famous, inspiring and motivating at the same time, people generally send these as messages in mail or through mobile to their near and dear ones. In such a case, such quotes form the “quote of the day”. Some well-known and very easy-to-relate quotes of the day are:
"It’s the trade of lawyers to question everything, yield nothing and talk by the hour."
"The difference between the right word and the almost-right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug.
"A friend is one who has the same enemies as you have."
Because quotes are always said by others, you always enclose quotes in open and close quotation marks (“…”) as a reference to the person who wrote it for the first time. The quote of the day can be of many kinds and are based on many themes. Such themes can be motivational, inspirational, devotional, patriotic, humorous, fun filled, based on technology, nature, and news, among many other themes. Sometimes people send across idioms and phrases that are very common as the quote of the day, such as “All that glitters is not gold".
Many a time, the quote of the day is sent to people right in the morning. This comes as an advantage to people who receive such quotes especially when the quote is a devotional, spiritual, inspirational or motivational quote. People draw inspiration from such quotes and set the mood for their day-long activities. However, a single may mean different to different set of people. Some people draw inspiration from a quote and get their tasks going along the similar lines. Others draw motivation from the quote and perform their tasks on their mindset. While some others set the quote as example and use it as a reference at all time. There are also many who just read the quote once and take no action and derive no inspiration. For them such quotes are such a piece of SMS or mail that has been forwarded by their near and dear ones. Thus, such people read the quote once and let it remain under piles of other mails or messages to finally get deleted unnoticed.
Some quotes for the day are only meant to serve as a break from work or the same schedule that we people keep in a day. Such quotes belong to the category, hilarious, and make the other person laugh and ease the stress at his or her end.
Thus, quotes do serve an important role in our lives and a "quote for the day" is like a breadth of fresh air amidst our busy schedules.
