Teenage pregnancy or pregnancy in young women is basically a condition when a lady becomes pregnant before the age of 20. Teen pregnancy is mostly unplanned and unintentional, and it leads to more health risks during the course of pregnancy. Well, the situation brings shame and fear in young mothers and more than that the thought of breaking this news among their families make them dread. Teen pregnancy can result in emotional crisis as a person feels pressurized from social as well as psychological fears. Pregnancy at a small age interrupts the studies and other career plans that result in stressful situations and seeking help seems almost impossible.

A young mother feel helpless as she wants to get away from this situation before anyone would actually know about it. Denying or avoiding the fact that you are pregnant can make things even more complicated. The health risks during pregnancy are much more in young ladies as compared to ladies getting pregnant at an older age. This is due to the reason that nutritional requirements of a young lady are more as she is also growing with her baby. Her body still requires special attention as she is growing with passing days. Prenatal care, thus becomes complex in teenage pregnancy.

It's difficult for a young mother to handle pregnancy as:

  • She is physically immature
  • She lacks general healthcare knowledge
  • Poor prenatal care or late prenatal care
  • Other bad habits such as smoking, alcohol intake or tobacco chewing can land various complications such as miscarriage, premature birth, birth defects, etc.
  • Emotional stress and social issues

An unplanned pregnancy may give birth to several inevitable problems that need to be tackled with care. Young pregnant women need support from a large group of people that includes friends, partner, family, counselors, and doctors. As she is also a teenager and does not understand what to do, everyone should support her to make things easier.

The causes for young age pregnancy vary from society to society. In some countries' early marriage while in others lack of education results in pregnancy at a younger age. Sex abuse, dating violence, lack of contraception methods, and socioeconomic factors such as poverty contributes to teenage pregnancy in most of the developing countries. The researches have shown that most of the cases report unintentional pregnancy.

The challenges are likely to be more for young mothers and their children but then another fact is that a younger mother is capable of delivering a healthy baby. What all she needs is support from all of us. There has been fewer cases of teenage pregnancy during last 3 to 4 years and this is mainly due to improved sex education, ease of abortion, and availability of contraception.  This changing scenario and efforts of Government have made parenting easy for young women.
